The Hidden Economics of General Trade: Why Smarter Workforce Models Matter More Than Bigger Budgets
General Trade has built some of the strongest FMCG businesses in India. In my experience working closely with sales and finance teams, I have seen how deeply this engine has shaped growth across categories. For years, the formula was clear: expand distribution, add feet on street, increase coverage, and push deeper into the market. That model delivered scale for years and shaped the FMCG landscape as we know it today.But the environment around that engine has changed.Margins are tighter. Categories are more competitive. Input costs are volatile. Working capital cycles are under pressure. Growth is still expected, but now it must come with discipline. And that changes the conversation.The question is no longer just, “How many outlets are we covering?”The strategic lens must move beyond presence in the market to the economic quality of that presence.From a P&L perspective, field force strength is not just an operational metric, it is a capital decision. Yet in many organisations, when growth slows or competition intensifies, the first instinct is still to add more feet on street. It feels like momentum. It signals action. But, beyond a point, adding people does not automatically add productivity.Every additional deployment unit increases supervision layers, coordination complexity, training effort, and fixed costs. If revenue per foot on street is not improving, expansion quietly begins to dilute operating leverage instead of strengthening it. The system looks bigger, but not necessarily stronger.Importantly, this is not about effort. Most field teams are working extremely hard. The issue is design.Static beats that have not been re-evaluated in years. Uniform servicing norms for outlets with very different revenue potential. Activity tracking that measures visits but not impact. These are not dramatic problems. They are small, structural inefficiencies that accumulate.A few percentage points lost in routing precision. Extra time spent on low-yield outlets. Delayed correction of execution gaps. Individually, all of this seems manageable and often does not receive the importance it deserves. Collectively, it turns out to be very expensive for the brand.What I see will build stronger organisations is not a reduction in ambition or expansion plans, but a shift in discipline. Organisations need to rethink how deployment is structured.Instead of geography-first coverage, they need to move towards potential-led allocation. Outlet segmentation needs to be sharper. Servicing frequency should reflect revenue contribution. Productivity conversations need to shift from “calls per day” to evaluating whether field effort is translating into sustained commercial value, either through revenue, distribution depth, or stronger retailer relationships. Technology supports this by providing visibility, but the real shift is in mindset. Using data to continuously question whether effort is aligned with economics.Even modest gains matter. A 5 percent improvement in productive time across thousands of0020outlets is not incremental, it is meaningful. Faster correction of gaps improves sell-through. Better allocation protects margins. Growth begins to come with stronger contribution, not just higher volume.Speed is another lever that is becoming critical. Stock-outs, competitive discounting, and new SKU introductions all require quick reallocation of field effort. Traditional planning cycles are often too slow. Smart workforce systems allow organisations to respond faster, protecting both retailer relationships and revenue realisation.From a financial standpoint, that responsiveness reduces volatility and improves planning confidence.General Trade will continue to anchor FMCG growth in India. What will differentiate organisations is how intelligently they manage the economics beneath it.Bigger budgets can fund expansion. But without structural clarity in workforce deployment, they rarely translate into sustained return. Smart workforce models and automation tools now make it possible to bring precision into routing, visibility into execution, and agility into redeployment decisions. When deployment is governed by economic logic, scale strengthens margins rather than stretching them.In the next phase of General Trade, the advantage will not lie in spending more. New York: As the final submission deadline for the ADC 105th Annual Awards approaches, three jury members from India have shared insights into emerging creative trends in the country and outlined what they will be looking for in this year’s entries.The ADC Annual Awards are presented by The One Club for Creativity, the global non-profit organisation that supports and celebrates the creative community. Moumita Pal, National Creative Director at Dentsu Creative, Gurugram, who is serving on the Fusion jury, pointed to a growing shift towards authenticity in Indian advertising.Speaking about creative trends, she said, “Honest advertising is clearly on the rise across the country. And it’s not just a stylistic shift, it’s a strategic one. Today’s audiences are more media-savvy than ever. They can spot exaggeration, forced emotion, and over-polished brand promises almost instantly. In response, brands are moving toward insight-led, humour-driven storytelling that feels real, relatable, and refreshingly self-aware.” On what she expects from entries this year, Pal added, “Bigger ideas. Ideas rooted in pure advertising. Less about technology, less driven by execution, and more about powerful, timeless thinking. Ideas that aren’t evaluated based on media impact, surround strategy, or TikTok acceptance but on the strength of the core concept itself.” Kamal Kumaar Rao, Co-founder and Art Director at Pure Street Photography, Mumbai, and a member of the Photography jury, highlighted a growing global ambition within India’s creative ecosystem.On current trends, he said, “In our local market right now, creativity is entering a new era of global ambition. What excites me most is that the industry here is no longer following global trends, it’s beginning to shape them. We’re seeing a new generation of work that is fearless, culturally intelligent, and driven by craft, with technology accelerating imagination rather than replacing it.” Regarding what he hopes to see among submissions, Rao noted, “I’m most looking forward to work that feels fearless, original, and deeply human, ideas that go beyond execution and truly shift perspective. The ADC has always celebrated craft and concept at the highest level, and I’m excited to see ideas that challenge the way we think, feel, and communicate through creativity.” Neha Tulsian, Executive Creative Director at NH1Design, Delhi, serving on the Packaging Design jury, described a broader cultural shift shaping Indian design.On emerging trends, she said, The most exciting thing happening in Indian design right now isn’t a style or a trend. It’s a shift in mindset. For years, Indian brands looked outward for approval. Our products, aesthetics, even our idea of “premium” often came with a borrowed accent. What we’re seeing now is a change in how culture is used. Folk patterns are no longer decorative. They’re being developed as design systems. Street typography is becoming brand language. Regional scripts are receiving the same care and craft once reserved only for Latin typefaces. Brands are being designed for Indian realities from the ground up. Indian light. Indian spaces. Indian price points. Indian ways of living. Many are embedding themselves in subcultures, regional food movements, craft revivals, and hyperlocal pride. Clients are asking for work that feels rooted rather than borrowed. Consumers want brands that recognise them, not global brands adapted for India. The resulting design language is more layered, more assured, and more expressive. Indian design today is shaping a visual language where maximalism and minimalism, tradition and modernity, aren’t opposites. They coexist naturally in contemporary India.” On what she will be looking for as a judge, Tulsian added, “As a jury member, I’m most looking forward to packaging that earns its place in life: bold on shelf, effortless to use, honest about its impact, and driven by an idea that stays with you after the product is gone. Dabur India Appoints Hershey Executive Herjit S. Bhalla as CEO of India Business
New Delhi: FMCG major Dabur India has named global confectionery executive Herjit S. Bhalla as Chief Executive Officer for its India business, effective April 2026, as part of a leadership realignment that elevates incumbent chief Mohit Malhotra to a purely global role.Bhalla will assume charge on April 1 and report to Malhotra, who has been redesignated as Whole-time Director & Global CEO from February 17, 2026, the company said in a regulatory filing. The appointment places a dedicated India CEO at the helm of Dabur’s largest market while Malhotra focuses on international expansion and group strategy.Bhalla joins Dabur from The Hershey Company, where he currently serves as Vice President, Canada & Global Customers. Over an eight-year tenure at Hershey, he led India operations as Managing Director from 2018 and subsequently moved into broader regional and global assignments, including VP roles covering India, Canada and AEMEA markets.With more than 25 years of experience across consumer goods and retail, Bhalla began his career at Unilever in 2000, holding a series of sales and marketing leadership roles across geographies. Between 2016 and 2022, he served as Marketing Director in Moscow for Unilever’s Russia business. He also had a stint as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Board Director at Metro Cash & Carry during 2016–17.An alumnus of Delhi University (B.Com Hons) and MDI Gurgaon (MBA), Bhalla is expected to steer Dabur’s India portfolio across foods, personal care and healthcare categories, where the company derives a substantial share of revenues.The leadership transition comes as Dabur sharpens its operating structure to separate India execution from global oversight, a model increasingly adopted by Indian consumer multinationals to accelerate domestic growth while scaling international markets.The company said Bhalla has been appointed as “Chief Executive Officer – India Business” in the category of senior management personnel, formalising the reporting line to the Global CEO.

GEC leads Day 1 premiums The opening day saw intense competition in Bucket A+ (Hindi/Urdu GEC; reserve ₹15 crore). Sony PAL emerged the top bidder at ₹16.55 crore, followed by Zee Anmol, Colors Rishtey and Sun Neo at ₹16.40 crore each. Shemaroo TV closed at ₹16.35 crore, while Star Utsav secured capacity at ₹16.25 crore — underscoring sustained advertiser interest in mass-reach entertainment on DD Free Dish.In Bucket A (Hindi/Urdu Movies; reserve ₹12 crore) on Day 1, Sony WAH secured a slot at ₹13.95 crore and Zee Anmol Cinema at ₹13.45 crore. Havas achieves 2025 guidance in full, ppsts +3.1% organic growth and 12.9% adjusted EBIT margin
Mumbai: Havas has delivered a solid financial performance for fiscal year 2025, fully achieving its guidance with organic growth of +3.1% and an Adjusted EBIT margin of 12.9%, up 50 basis points from 12.4% in 2024.Net revenue for the year reached €2,783 million, supported by strong organic growth slightly above the upper end of the +2.5% to +3.0% guidance range. Adjusted EBIT stood at €358 million, representing a margin of 12.9%. Net income rose 11.1% to €210 million, while Net income, Group share, increased 9.2% to €189 million. After accounting for a positive scope effect of 0.9% and a negative foreign exchange impact of 3.9%, total reported growth for the quarter stood at +0.5%.For the full year, revenue amounted to €2,913 million, up 1.7% compared to 2024. Organic growth came in at +3.1%, a sharp turnaround from -0.8% a year earlier.Performance by Business Line and GeographyNet revenue contributions came from Havas Media (38%), Havas Creative (40%) and Havas Health (22%).Regionally, all geographies posted positive organic growth in Q4: Europe (50% of net revenue): +3.5% in Q4; +2.0% for full year 2025. North America (34%): +4.6% in Q4; +4.9% for the full year, driven by Media and Creative. APAC & Africa (9%): +1.8% in Q4; +1.7% for full year, supported by India. Headcount stood at 22,641 at year-end, including 303 employees from newly acquired agencies. Restructuring costs declined to €22 million from €29 million in 2024.Net financial expense improved to €34 million, while the effective tax rate fell to 30.1% following the implementation of new tax groups in France and Spain. Net income attributable to the Group increased to €189 million.The Group ended 2025 with consolidated equity of €1,841 million and net cash of €207 million. Gross debt totaled €87 million, with available liquidity of €1,288 million. Acquisitions and Partnerships During 2025, Havas acquired majority stakes in 11 agencies, meeting its annual acquisition target. In the fourth quarter alone, it acquired five agencies across Germany, France, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Belgium, strengthening advisory, experiential, data and media capabilities.The Group also entered strategic partnerships with US-based AI platforms Vurvey Labs and Akkio to enhance its Converged.AI Operating System and agentic AI capabilities. Since the start of 2026, Havas has announced additional majority stake acquisitions in Spain and Sweden. Shareholder Returns In 2025, contributions to shareholders totaled €97 million, including €79 million paid to Havas N.V. shareholders. தஞ்சை மாவட்டம், திருக்காட்டுப்பள்ளியில் பள்ளி விடுதியில் தங்கி படித்து வந்த லாவண்யா என்ற மாணவி, கடந்த 2022-ம் ஆண்டு விஷம் குடித்து தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டார். சித்தி கொடுமை, பள்ளியில் கொடுத்த கூடுதல் பணி போன்றவை காரணமாக சொல்லப்பட்டது. ஆனால் பள்ளி நிர்வாகமும், விடுதி காப்பாளர்களும் கட்டாய மதமாற்றத்தில் ஈடுபட்டதாகவும், இதனாலேயே விஷம் குடித்ததாகவும் சில அரசியல் கட்சிகள் குற்றஞ்சாட்டின. இதனை மாவட்ட இருக்கிறார். 6. முதல் லாக் டவுன் முடிந்து விடுதி 2021 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி 20ஆம் தேதி மீண்டும் திறந்த பிறகு விடுதியில் துணை காப்பாளர்கள் இல்லாத காரணத்தால் லாவண்யாவிற்கு சில பொறுப்புகள் வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. வருகை பதிவேடு பில் புத்தகம் விடுதிக்கான கட்டணம் வசூலிக்கும் புத்தகத்தை பராமரிப்பது உள்ளிட்டவை வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. 7. கொரோனா காரணமாக 2021 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் ஒன்றாம் தேதி முதல் 2021 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை 14 ஆம் தேதி வரை இரண்டாவது லாக் டவுன் சமயத்திலும் 20 நாள்கள் லாவண்யா விடுதியிலேயே தங்கியிருந்திருக்கிறார். 8. 2021 தீபாவளி சமயத்தில் விடுதியில் சில பொருட்கள் காணாமல் போனதை தொடர்ந்து விடுதியில் தங்கி இருந்த மாணவிகள் மற்றும் லாவண்யாவிடமும் விடுதி காப்பாளரான சகாய மேரி விசாரணை நடத்தியுள்ளார். அதில் சில பொருட்கள் இலவசமாக லாவண்யா மாணவர்களுக்கு வழங்கியதாக கண்டறியப்பட்டது இதன் காரணமாக லாவண்யாவை விடுதி காப்பாளர் சகாய மேரி கடிந்து கொண்டுள்ளார். இதனால் லாவண்யா மிகவும் அவமானம் அடைந்ததாகவும், அதனால் இந்த மன அழுத்தத்தில் இருந்துள்ளார் 9. 2021 ஆம் ஆண்டு கிறிஸ்துமஸ் விடுமுறையின் போது லாவண்யா 12 ஆம் வகுப்பு படித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த அதன் காரணமாக வீட்டுக்கு செல்லாமல் விடுதியிலேயே தங்கி இருந்துள்ளார். அந்த சமயத்தில் விடுதிக்காப்பாளர் சகாய மேரியால் கணக்கு வழக்குகள் உள்ளிட்ட பல வேலைகள் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. 10. கணக்கு வழக்குகளில் சில தவறுகள் செய்த போது சகாயம் மேரி லாவண்யாவை கடிந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார். விடுதி காப்பாளர் சகாய மேரி விடுதி தொடர்பான கணக்கு வழக்குகளை விரைந்து முடித்து தருமாறு அடிக்கடி லாவண்யாவுக்கு அழுத்தம் கொடுத்துள்ளார். இதன் காரணமாக லாவண்யா மன அழுத்தத்தில் இருந்துள்ளார் 11. தொடர்ந்து 2022 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி ஒன்பதாம் தேதி மாணவர்களுக்கு சில அறிவுறுத்தல்களை விடுதி காப்பாளர் சகாய மேரி வழங்கி உள்ளார். அதன்படி பொங்கல் விடுமுறை முடிந்து விடுதிக்கு திரும்பும் போது அனைவரும் விடுதிக்கான கட்டணத்தை செலுத்தி இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று கூறியுள்ளார். அன்றைய தினமும் லாவண்யா விடுதி தொடர்பான கணக்குகளை முடித்து விடுதி காப்பாளரான சகாய மேரியிடம் வழங்கிவிட்டு மாலை ஐந்து முப்பது மணி அளவில் ஜெபம் செய்வதற்காக அனைத்து மாணவிகளுடன் குழுமியிருந்திருக்கிறார். அந்த சமயத்தில்தான் திடீரென லாவண்யா பச்சை மற்றும் நீல நிறத்தில் வாந்தி எடுத்தபோது அவருக்கு அங்கு முதலுதவி செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இதனை அடுத்து அன்று இரவு லாவண்யா எந்த உணவும் எடுத்துக் கொள்ளாமல் தூங்க சென்றுள்ளார். 12. பின்னர் அடுத்த நாள் லாவண்யாவின் பெற்றோருக்கு விடுதி காப்பாளர் தொலைபேசியில் அழைத்து அவரை வீட்டிற்கு அழைத்துச் செல்ல கூறியுள்ளார். அதன் அடிப்படையில் லாவண்யாவை அவரது பெற்றோர் வீட்டிற்கு அழைத்து சென்றுள்ளனர். வீட்டிற்கு சென்ற பின்பும் லாவண்யாவின் 13. இந்த நிலையில் 2022 ஜனவரி 15ஆம் தேதி லாவண்யா ரத்த வாந்தி எடுத்ததை தொடர்ந்து ஒரு தனியார் மருத்துவமனைக்கு விரைந்து அழைத்து செல்லப்பட்டுள்ளார். அங்கு அவரை பரிசோதித்த போது லாவண்யாவின் நிலை மிக மிக மோசமாக இருந்ததாக தெரிவித்ததோடு அருகில் இருக்கக்கூடிய அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிச்சைக்காக அழைத்து செல்லும்படி அவருடைய பெற்றோருக்கு மருத்துவர்கள் அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளனர். இதனை அடுத்து தனியார் மருத்துவமனையின் பரிந்துரையின் பேரில் தஞ்சாவூர் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிக்கு லாவண்யா அழைத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டார். அங்கு சிகிச்சை அளித்த போது லாவண்யா நினைவுடன் இருந்ததாக மருத்துவர்கள் தெரிவித்திருக்கிறார்கள். மேலும் லாவண்யாவின் நாக்கு மஞ்சள் நிறத்தில் இருந்ததால் அவர் விஷமருந்தி இருக்க கூடும் என்பதை கண்டறிந்து அவருக்கு தீவிர சிகிச்சை பிரிவில் சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டது. இறுதியாக லாவண்யா என்ன விஷத்தை அறிந்தினார் என்பதை மருத்துவர்களிடம் தெரிவித்திருக்கிறார். குறிப்பாக பூச்சி மருந்து அதுவும் 2022 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி ஒன்பதாம் தேதியே அந்த விஷ மருந்தை அருந்தியதாக கூறியுள்ளார். 14. இதையடுத்து லாவண்யாவின் தந்தை முருகானந்தம் அவருடைய உறவினர்களுக்கு அலைபேசியில் அழைத்து லாவண்யா விஷம் அருந்திய விவகாரத்தை தெரிவித்துள்ளார். ஆனால் அப்போதும் மதமாற்றம் காரணமாக விஷம் அருந்தினார் என்பது தொடர்பாக எந்த ஒரு விவகாரத்தையும் முருகானந்தம் தெரிவிக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் விடுதி காப்பாளரான சகாய மேரியின் அழுத்தம் காரணமாக விஷத்தை அருந்தியதை முருகானந்தம் தன்னுடைய உறவினர்களிடம் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். 15. லாவண்யா பேசும் வீடியோவில் அவர் நினைவுடன் இருந்ததும் அதில் விடுதி காப்பாளரான சகாயம் ஏரி தன்னையும் தன்னைப் போல பிற மாணவிகளையும் விடுதி தொடர்பான வேலைகளை கொடுத்து அதிக அழுத்தம் கொடுத்ததாக கூறியிருந்தார். இவ்வாறு தொடர் வேலைப்பளு காரணமாக தன்னுடைய படிப்பில் கவனம் செலுத்த இயலவில்லை என்பதையும் அந்த வீடியோ பதிவில் லாவண்யா கூறியிருந்தார். மேலும் ஒன்றரை கிளாஸ் அளவுக்கு பூச்சி மருந்தை 9-1-2022 அன்று அருந்தியதை அவர் வீடியோவில் தெரிவித்து இருக்கிறார் 16. முடியவில்லை என்பதை கூறியிருக்கிறார் 17. தன்னை படிக்க விடாமல் சகாயம் மேரி தடுத்து துன்புறுத்தி இருக்கிறார். தான் பூச்சி மருந்தை குடித்ததற்கு காரணமும் அவர்தான் எனவே அவர் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் நடத்தப்பட்ட விசாரணையின் அடிப்படையில் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்ட லாவண்யா உட்பட வேறு எவரையும் அத்தகைய மதமாற்றத்திற்கு உட்படுத்தவும் இல்லை முயற்சி எதுவும் மேற்கொள்ளப்படவும் இல்லை என்பது விசாரணையில் தெளிவாக லாவண்யாவின் உடலை பெற்றுக்கொள்ள மறுத்துள்ளனர், மேலும் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர் . 21. இறந்து போன லாவன்யாவின் உடலை பெறக் கூடாது என்பதற்காக அவருடைய தந்தை மற்றும் அவருடைய சித்தி ஆகியோர் பல இடங்களில் ஒளிந்து இருந்தார்கள். 22. முன்னதாக மதமாற்ற அழுத்தம் என குற்றம் சாட்டி முத்துவேல் என்பவர் பதிவு செய்த லாவண்யாவின் வீடியோக்கள் அவருடைய அடையாளங்கள் மறைக்கப்படாமல் சமூக வலைதளங்களில் பகிரப்பட்டன, இது தொடர்பாக விஷ்வ இந்து பரிஷத் தலைவர் முத்துவேல் மீது காவல்துறை சிறார் நீதி சட்டத்தின் கீழ் வழக்கு பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். மாணவி தற்கொலை வழக்கு சி.பி.ஐ அதிகாரிகள் விசாரணை 23. லாவண்யா உயிரிழந்தது என்பது மன அழுத்தத்தின் காரணமாக தான். ஏனெனில் விடுதி காப்பாளர் ஆன சகாய மேரி விடுதி கணக்கு வழக்கு உள்ளிட்ட பல விவகாரங்களில் லாவண்யாவை ஈடுபடுத்தியதாலும் விடுமுறைக்கு கூட அவரை வீட்டுக்கு அனுப்பாமல் வைத்திருந்ததாலும் ஏற்பட்ட மன அழுத்தம் தான் லாவண்யாவின் மரணத்திற்கு காரணம். 24. சகாய மேரியை பொறுத்தவரை லாவண்யாவுக்கு அதிக அளவிலான வேலைப்பளுவை கொடுப்பதை அறிந்திருந்தும், அவர் அதனை குறைத்துக் கொள்ளவில்லை. இதனால் லாவண்யாவுக்கு மன அழுத்தம் ஏற்பட்டு இருக்கிறது. பள்ளி பாடங்களை படிக்க முடியாமல் திணறவும் செய்திருக்கிறார். இறுதியாக கடுமையான மன உளைச்சல் ஏற்பட்டதன் காரணமாக லாவண்யா தன்னுடைய உயிரை மாய்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றார். 25. லாவண்யா தன்னை படிப்பதற்கு அனுமதிக்குமாறு விடுதி காப்பாளர் சகோதரி சகாய மேரியிடம் பலமுறை கோரிக்கை வைத்தும், அதற்கு விடுதி காப்பாளர் இசையவில்லை என்பது விசாரணையில் தெளிவாக கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளது. 26. எனவே மேற்கூறிய செயல்களை கருத்தில் கொண்டு குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்ட சகாய மேரி லாவண்யாவை தற்கொலைக்கு தூண்டியது தெளிவாக வெளிப்பட்டுள்ளது. சகாய மேரியின் இந்த செயல் ஐபிசி 305 மற்றும் சிறார் நீதி சட்டத்தின் பிரிவு 75 இன் கீழ் தற்கொலைக்கு தூண்டும் குற்றமாகும். எனவே இந்த அறிக்கையின் அடிப்படையில் குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்ட நபர் மீது விசாரணை நடத்தி அவர் மீது சட்ட நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று சிபிஐ தன்னுடைய அறிக்கையில் தெரிவித்துள்ளது. 27. குடும்ப அழுத்தம் காரணம் குறித்த ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளத் தகுந்த ஆதாரங்கள் எதுவும் கிடைக்கப்பெறவில்லை எனவும் சிபிஐ கூறியுள்ளது.
